How to check conduit fill for THHN in EMT
EMT plus THHN is the common shop pull. Count the wires, then read percent — not a memorized “how many 12s fit.”
How to run this check
- Choose EMT and the trade size already installed or planned.
- Add each THHN size and quantity, including the ground.
- If it fails, read the next EMT size instead of forcing the pull.
A pull that fits and a pull that does not
3 hot/neutral current-carrying 12 AWG plus one 12 AWG ground is four conductors. This page’s 1/2 in EMT result is fits at 17.5%.
Nine 12 AWG THHN in 1/2 in EMT is fits at 39.4%. The same nine in 3/4 in EMT is fits at 22.5%.
Do not mix this up with wire size
Conduit fill will not tell you the next AWG for a 180 ft feeder. Wire Size will.
Use this page when the conductors are already chosen and the only question is the pipe.

FAQ
Can I use a memorized max count instead of percent?
A memorized count fails as soon as the mix of sizes changes. Percent handles mixed pulls.
Does this include jamming or pull tension?
No. It is a planning fill check, not a pulling plan.
Planning reference only. Verify against the current NEC, manufacturer data, and the authority having jurisdiction. This is not engineering advice or a license substitute.
