Series Resistance Calculation

Definition of Series Connection

Components connected end-to-end, current has only one path.

Total Resistance Formula

R_total = R1 + R2 + R3 + ...

Characteristics

  • Current is equal everywhere
  • Voltage is distributed according to resistance
  • Total resistance is greater than any individual resistance
  • Voltage Division Formula

    U1 = U × R1 / R_total
    U2 = U × R2 / R_total

    Example

    Two resistors R1=30Ω and R2=20Ω connected in series, connected to 100V power supply.

    R_total = 30 + 20 = 50Ω
    I = 100 / 50 = 2A
    U1 = 100 × 30 / 50 = 60V
    U2 = 100 × 20 / 50 = 40V
